Adhesives are essential tools in jewelry making and stone repair, but choosing the right one can seem daunting. Here, we break down the main types of adhesives we offer, their applications, and tips for use.
Types of Adhesives
We carry CA Glue and two-part epoxies, as well as E6000, each with distinct properties. CA Glue comes in Thin, Medium, and Thick varieties, and cures rapidly, generally within a minute. However, it may not provide as strong an adhesive bond as other options. Epoxies, such as Epoxy 330 and Epoxy 220, offer a robust bond and are thicker, but require mixing two components and have a slower curing time. E6000 is a one-part adhesive that dries clear and bonds strongly to most surfaces, making it excellent for jewelry applications.
Applications and Usage Scenarios
For superficial cracks in stones, Thin CA Glue helps to halt further damage. Medium and Thick CA Glue can fill voids in rocks, and the finished repair can be sanded and polished for an unnoticeable finish. E6000 shines in permanently bonding stones to metal pendant settings and other findings. For larger voids in stones or when a strong bond is required for repairing gemstones, Epoxy 330 and 220 come to the rescue.
Selecting the Right Adhesive
Consider factors such as the amount needed, the speed of curing required, and the durability of the application. If rapid curing is necessary, CA Glue, possibly accelerated with our spray accelerator, would be a great choice. But for stronger bonds, you might want to choose Epoxy or E6000.
Tips and Techniques
Before applying these adhesives to your final pieces, practice on some test pieces. While we offer epoxy dissolver and CA Glue debonder for cleanup, getting a feel for the adhesives beforehand can save you time and ensure a cleaner final product.
