Lapidary Carving for Creative Jewelry, 4th Edition - Henry Hunt

Few books cover the design side of gemstone carving, and Henry Hunt's American Lapidary remains one of the most valuable. Hunt explains the two main design approaches every carver works with: geometric designs built from flat surfaces and straight lines, and curvilinear designs built from curved surfaces and flowing forms. He covers the tools and techniques each requires and how to combine them in more complex pieces, with examples from fellow carvers. Out of print for years, it was reprinted in 2012 with the original text and photos.
